AREAS OF EXPERTISE
TRAINING AND CAREER
Mr Apthorp trained at St Bartholomew’s Hospital in London and carried out orthopaedic training at Guy’s and St Thomas’ Hospital. He then travelled to Perth, Western Australia to further develop his expertise in complex hip and knee surgery, working alongside Professor David Wood.
After becoming a consultant in 1999, Mr Apthorp continued to develop his practice, specialising in revision hip surgery, primary and bilateral hip replacements, and young adults with hip problems.
Pioneering surgery
In 2004, he pioneered Rapid Recovery in the UK, setting up the first Rapid Recovery Programme for joint replacements. Figures from the Department of Health confirmed that Mr Apthorp’s combination of pioneering surgery and Rapid Recovery Programme allowed his patients to enjoy the shortest hospital stays for hip replacement procedures in England, along with extremely low complication rates.
One of the first surgeons in the UK to carry out day-case hip replacement surgery, Mr Apthorp was also the first to carry out a bilateral hip replacement where the patient was able to return home 24 hours later.
Unique approach
Since then, his unique surgical approach has led to improved outcomes and reduced length of stay for thousands of patients. He lectures on hip surgery internationally, and trains consultants from around the world in minimally invasive hip replacement techniques and rapid recovery.
As well as working on the design and development of new joint replacement implants, his expertise has seen Mr Apthorp undertake research projects and audit to ensure best practice, optimal results and patient satisfaction.
