Many years ago, I decided I would only practice hip surgery. My sole focus on hip replacement has allowed me to refine and develop pioneering approaches throughout my career. This includes my own minimally invasive technique, which spares the main muscles of the hip and leads to a faster recovery with less bleeding and less pain.
That means safe surgery that, typically, enables patients to walk on the day of surgery and be discharged after just one or two nights in hospital. By the time you leave, you’ll be comfortable, independently mobile and even able to climb stairs.
Two weeks after your discharge, you should have recovered well enough to start driving again. A return to sport usually takes between six to eight weeks, although this will depend on your individual circumstances and the intensity of the activity you’re looking to get back to (high-impact sports, such as running and skiing, often require a longer recovery time).
